The town of Bethel offers a comfortable country setting. Many
new residents to Bethel have transferred it form a small New England town to a diverse,
active community that has managed to preserve much of its historic ambiance. Houses range
from farmhouses dating from the 1700s and turn of the century Victorians to suburban ranch
and colonial homes. Zoning in Bethel has also provided apartments, condominiums and
multi-family housing as well as two housing facilities for senior citizens.
The downtown area surrounds the P.T. Barnum Square, named for the famous showman born here in 1810. Here you can find many intriguing shops and eateries which attract browsers and antique buffs, especially on weekends.
Mecknauer Park is the major recreational facility of 33 acres with a pond, athletic fields, and picnic sites. Both Putnam Park and Huntingtown Park straddle the Bethel-Redding town lines, offering a glimpse into colonial history.
All the ameninites of next-door neighbor Danbury are within a
few minutes drive, and include the Kenosia and Candlewood lakes, Rodgers and Richter
Parks, and many shopping areas as well as the Danbury Fair Mall with over 300 stores.
